iPhoto Errors - Unreadable Files
There are several instances when it has been reported by iPhoto users that they were unable to import pictures from their cameras into their Mac because of an alert indicating the presence of an unreadable file. This alert reports that the pictures could not be uploaded because their files types are not recognized by the computer, or that they do not contain valid data.
The iPhoto error alert reads: "Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)". Preceding this message is the number of unreadable files, while following it is the list of the files.
Causes of the Error
This alert pops up when you attempt to import files that are not pictures or damaged picture files, and if the computer's hard disk is filled to its limits.
Solutions to the Problem
To solve this problem, verify if the files you are attempting to import are actually picture files. If they appear to be pictures, use an alternative application to open them. You can try this with Preview as it has the capability of opening the same image files that can be opened with iPhoto. If Preview, or any other graphics application, cannot open the file, it is probably either not a picture file or it is damaged.
If the alternative graphics application can open the file, the problem may be due to a filled-up hard disk. To verify this, go to the Finder, select the disk icon, and choose File>Get Info. A Mac OSX Info box appears detailing General Information about your computer. Among these data is the "Available" line. Right beside it is the amount of free space in the computer disk. If the disk is indeed full, you will need to delete files or applications you no longer need.
