Wedding quilts have long memorialized this important event in couples’ lives. Incorporating traditional motifs that make the viewer think wedding, such as bells, hearts and flowers, as well as signatures of guests, make for memories that will last as long as the quilt. Modern techniques, like photo transfers, enable the quilter to add photographic memories of the special event. Whether made full size for a bed or a small wall hanging, wedding quilt projects are a wonderful way to capture this time in the new couple’s life as they start their journey together. - Cut a square of fabric for each guest at each bridal shower and the wedding reception. Supply fabric-safe permanent markers and ask the guests to sign each square, adding well wishes if they desire. Assemble the squares, adding extra fabrics and shapes as desired, into a wedding quilt that marks the day with the guests’ thoughts and signatures.
- Transfer pictures from all the events leading up to and surrounding the wedding onto plain cotton muslin using available kits. Incorporate pictures into chosen quilt blocks, assemble into a quilt that commemorates the wedding and all the people who made it special.
- Immortalize the wedding in applique. Some appropriate blocks include hearts, hands and wedding bells, such as a love birds, bride's bouquet, and wedding bells blocks. Think to add one signifying the couple’s new home, symbolizing or replicating their wedding invitation, or add an announcement using fine-tipped fabric marker script surrounded by appliques of choice. Tie the entire quilt together using the wedding colors.
- Construct a wedding ring quilt top and display it at the bride’s showers and/or wedding. Make the rings the color of the wedding or their new home decor. Supply a fabric-safe permanent marker for the guests to sign the quilt inside each of the wedding rings. Quilt when finished for the newlywed couple to have a keepsake of their wedding day that they will use their entire married life.
- A white-on-white, whole cloth quilt, has no piecing, taking its elegance from the allover white quilting on white fabric. Heavily quilted, this wedding quilt takes its motifs from traditional wedding patterns, such as large, feathered hearts, flowers and bells, and adding lots of cross-hatching in the large central areas. Hand quilt in the couple’s names as well as the date, time and location of their wedding for a truly memorable wedding quilt.
