    • 1). Look on the Kelley Blue Book website (see Resources) to get the fair market value for your vehicle. Enter in your New Jersey zip code and your car details. Use the "Private Party Value" amount as the fair market value.

    • 2). Use the online version of Publication 78 on the Internal Revenue Service website (see Resources) to locate charities in your area of New Jersey. Charities that accept vehicle donations in New Jersey include the New Jersey chapter of the Red Cross, Car Angel, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Jersey, the New Jersey Parents' Caucus and the Salvation Army.

    • 3). Contact the organization that you've chosen to confirm that it's currently accepting car donations. For instance, the New Jersey chapter of the Red Cross has an online form on its website (see Resources) so that you can contact the organization with your car details.

    • 4). Make arrangements to get your vehicle to the charity. Certain organizations may have the vehicle towed for you, while others may require that you get the vehicle to them.

    • 5). Sign your vehicle title over to the charity when you deliver the vehicle. This is also when you can get your donation receipt, which you need for your taxes.
