These temporary files can eat a lot of system memory so you can free up your system memory by removing the temporary files. For instance, Windows XP offers a “Disk Cleanup” utility for removing all the unwanted temporary files stored on your PC.

Identify and repair disk errors: You can check for the integrity of the files stored on your computer hard disk by running the Error checking software utility present in Windows operating system.

Rearrange data stored on your hard disk: Several times the data stored on the hard disk is in fragmented form thereby consuming a large system memory. So, for improving the performance of your computer you should defragment all the data stored on the hard disk. Windows include a built-in software utility known as “Disk Defragmenter”, which is capable of defragmenting the hard disk. Follow this step every month for a better system performance.

Protect your PC against viruses:
It is strongly recommended to install some good antivirus software having the automatic update feature to provide real time protection for your PC against viruses, worms and other types of malicious codes.
