Monterey, CA Elder Abuse: Make Sure Your Caregiver Is Bonded and Insured
Monterey, CA Elder Abuse: Make Sure Your Caregiver Is Bonded & Insured: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad California
Financial elder abuse cases are becoming all too common and I was glad to read in The Carmel Pine Cone that a woman who stole heirloom jewelry from a 78 year old Seaside woman and callously sold it for peanuts as scrap metal was found guilty of grand theft. Hired as a housekeeper to come in and clean once a week, she cleaned out her client's jewelry box and stole her wedding band, her grandmother's wedding band, her school class ring and a 1955 nursing pin. She then took it to a local jeweler who melted down the gold. When confronted, the housekeeper admitted the theft and offered to give her client the paltry money she had received from the jewelry store. The client said no, these were priceless to her. She then called the police and found that the housekeeper had been convicted of many crimes including forgery, grand theft, petty theft and residential burglary. On March 5 she will be sentenced and could be sent to prison for six years. Sadly, this could have all been avoided if the client would have called a reputable company like Family inHome Caregiving which does a thorough screening of all of its employees including DMV, criminal and personal reference checks. We also have a criminal bond which is four times what many of our competitors have. Thankfully, we have never had to use it, but it does give you peace of mind. In addition to the risk of financial theft, hiring someone under the table leaves you at risk if the person injures themselves in your home. They could slap you with a big lawsuit and you could be in trouble with the I.R.S. if you haven't withheld taxes from their pay. You are also required to get workers compensation for household employees which few employers do when hiring people under the table. Although it will cost you a few more dollars more to hire an employee through an agency, it could save you heartbreak like this 78 year old woman in Seaside felt when she lost her wedding ring forever.
About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
