When women want to remove unwanted hair, there are several different types of products that can help make the task easier. Hair removal creams, wax, and products such as razors, tweezers and buffers remove both large and small areas of unwanted hair from the body. These products help women maintain smooth, hair-free skin . - Waxing is done to remove large amounts of hair from the body at one time. The wax is warmed and applied to the skin, which can be done by a professional at a salon or at home. A cloth strip is applied over the wax and quickly pulled off. Waxing pulls the hair out at the roots, which can be somewhat painful. The hair should be at least 1/4-inch long for the best results.
- Depilatory creams use chemicals to remove hair from the body. According to the Women's Health Beauty website, the chemicals in depilatory creams contain substances such as sulfides, sodium and calcium thioglycolate. These chemicals act on the protein in hair and dissolve it, causing the hair to fall away from the skin. The hair removed usually grows back within a few days. Caution is best used with these creams, as the chemicals can burn or irritate the skin.
- Razors are used to remove the hair by cutting it off at the skin's surface. They are used in conjunction with a shaving cream or soap to keep the skin lubricated and to avoid cuts. The results from shaving usually last about 1 to 3 days. Tweezers remove hair by plucking it out of the skin and the results last about 3 to 8 weeks. Tweezers are made to pull one hair out at a time, so they are not recommended for hair removal over large surfaces. Buffers usually come as a mitt with a rough surface, which is used to buff away hair at the skin's surface. Buffers keep the skin smooth between shaving or waxing and work well for buffing away fine hairs.
