How to Clean Before Painting Plastic

    • 1). Make a baking soda paste before you clean the item. This paste works well in cleaning any plastic surface quickly and efficiently. Take three to five tablespoons of your regular baking soda and put it in a cup. Add two to four tablespoons of water. Make sure you have more baking soda than water so the paste is not runny. If the paste is too runny, add more baking soda. Put it aside.

    • 2). Take a container of your choice and fill it with water. The water does not have to be a certain temperature. The container should be a relatively good size so it fits the plastic item that you are cleaning. When you have the water prepared, put that aside as well.

    • 3). Apply the baking soda paste to the plastic with a soft cloth or a sponge. Rub the paste all over the plastic until the surface is entirely covered. Clean the plastic with this paste until you see dirt coming off or until the plastic looks cleaner. Use the water in the container to clean off the paste.

    • 4). Wash the plastic thoroughly using the soft cloth or sponge. Make sure you clean the sponge from the paste before you use it again. After you have finished cleaning the plastic, either leave it out to dry or use a paper towel to dry the surface. Now that the plastic has been cleaned, you can paint it.
