For Custom Converting, the Key Is in the Web Guide System

In several different industries, manufacturers find that one size does not fit all when converting webs into usable goods. For custom converting, companies seek out the newest technologies to improve their production line processes. New converting technology offers industries equipment that speeds up the converting process and also improves accuracy.

Depending on a company's custom converting needs, there are several pieces of converting equipment that can process webs into end products that are ready to sell and distribute. There are several different types of web guiding systems, including a shifting unwind stand, intermediate displacement guide, intermediate steering guide, and the shifting rewind stand. Below are descriptions of the different types of web guide systems:

Shifting Unwind Stand: The shifting unwind stand is compact and provides web guide options that will correct unwinding rolls that are poorly wound. A shifting idler roll attaches to the stand. This type of system provides immediate corrections when needed for the web. These systems work best when the converting process begins with the unwinding roll.

Intermediate Displacement Guide: This type of converting system works well for manufacturing facilities that have limited space. These guides are highly versatile and are ideal for label and other narrow web applications, as well as business form production, bag manufacturing, laminating, plastic film extrusion, and slitter rewind functions.

Intermediate Steering Guide: The intermediate steering guide controls the position of long web spans and works best for envelope manufacturing, plastic film, flexographic printing, belt guiding, and multi-wall bag manufacturing.

Shifting Rewind Stand: The shifting rewind stand is a compact system that provides guiding options for aligning the web. It is simple to use and very precise. A fixed idler is used with a shifting rewind stand. Using this equipment creates nicely wound rolls.

No matter what type of custom converting equipment a company needs, there is sure to be a system that will help increase production and facilitate a more efficient work flow. All-air web guiding systems only require the use of low pressure plant air--no hydraulics or electronics are required. These systems tend to last longer and require less maintenance than other types of electronic or hydraulic guiding systems. To determine the best type of web guiding system for a specific production process, an application engineer can provide the best options and explain in more detail how each system works.
