How to Strip a Garage Floor of Paint
- 1). Open the garage. Wear a respirator at all times.
- 2). Pour a half-gallon of paint stripper into a 5-gallon bucket. Don't use a 1-gallon bucket, as this will expose the stripper to more air, leading to a faster evaporation rate.
- 3). Apply stripper to a 2-by-2-foot area of the garage floor, using a china brush. Immediately position a plastic drop cloth over the solvent-based stripper; this step is critical, as exposed stripper will evaporate before it as a chance to loosen the paint.
- 4). Let the stripping agent loosen the paint on the 2-by-2-foot area for five to 10 minutes. Remove the drop cloth.
- 5). Scrape off the loosened floor paint from the 2-by-2-foot area with a molding scraper.
- 6). Continue the paint removal process across the rest of the garage floor, working on one 2-by-2-foot area at a time. Stop when the entire floor is free from paint.
