How to Drop Into Ramps With a Skateboard

    • 1). Place the tail of the board on the platform, with the deck hanging in midair over the ramp and the coping of the ramp butted up against the truck of the board. The coping is the edge of the platform -- the precipice where the ramp drops down below the platform.

    • 2). Place one foot on the tail of the deck of the board; your other foot remains on the platform. Look down the ramp, your head facing down the fall line. This forces you to open your shoulders slightly. Opening your shoulders means that your shoulders are positioned 10 to 20 degrees in relation to the the fall line, instead of positioned parallel to the rails -- edges -- of the board.

    • 3). Rotate your shoulders left by looking down the fall line, if your right foot is on the tail of the board. If your left foot is on the tail, turn your head right to open them.

    • 4). Bend your knees 20 degrees to lower your center of gravity. Lift your will-be front foot off the platform and place it on the front truck of the board. When you place your front foot on the board, it falls from its suspended position, the front and back wheels make contact with the ramp and you accelerate down the face.

    • 5). Dip your front shoulder as you drop in. This forces your body to assume a perpendicular position in relation to the face of the ramp. If you lean back, the board skids on its tail or flies out from beneath you. Dipping your front shoulder is critical to staying centered on the board and staying centered is key to dropping in.
