Mount Carstensz - the Pride of Indonesia
Mount Carstensz is a mountain range in Indonesia's Sudirman Range. Situated in the central highlands of the west, it is among one of the highest mountains in Indonesia. It is about 4,884 meters high. It is the highest mountain on the isle of New Guinea, continent of Australia and 5th largest in the Southeast Asia.
It is known as the highest island peak of the world. Between Himalayas and Andes, no other mountain surpasses its height. It is famous for offering the famous Carstensz Expedition Indonesia mountaineering tour.
These mountain ranges are situated within 4 kilometers of the massive open-hole mine in Grasberg. The surrounding areas of the peak were devoid of human interaction until the Europeans came here. Locals didn't ventured anywhere near the mountain and called the peak Nemangkawi in the local Amungkal language.
A Dutch explorer Jan Carstenszoon renamed the mountain as "Carstensz Pyramid" after he went there to see glaciers on a clear day in the year 1623. His sighting was not believed for decades and he was ridiculed for his claim of seeing ice near the equator.
Another Dutch explorer Hendrik Albert Lorentz and his companions climbed the snow laden peak of Mount Puncak Jaya for the first time.
Now a national park has been established in a well defined range build around the mountain. It is called Lorentz National park. The range is referred to as Carstensz Range and has been in existence since 1919.
In 1963, the country of Indonesia took possession of the province in which the mountain range is situated. They renamed it as 'Puntjak Soekarno' after the serving Indonesian President. Later on they changed it to Puncak Jaya which means victory in local language. Mountaineers still address this peak and the adjoining range as Carstensz Pyramid.
Special government permits are required to visit the range and adjoining peaks. During 1995 - 2005, the mountain was closed and tourists were not allowed to go there. In the year 2006, government has allowed various adventure tourism agencies to carry out their tours with a special permit.
Mountaineers have a list called Seven Summits peak bagging list. Mountain Puncak Jaya is the most demanding of them all. It has the highest technical rating and requires the greatest physical output. Some people replace Mount Puncak jaya with Mount Kosciuszko.
Most standard route followed by the mountain climbers is through the North. It goes along the summit ridge and is completely filled with rocky terrain. The area is mostly inaccessible to general public due to the presence of a large mine. Hikers are allowed only on special permits, which are extremely hard to come by. Most standard route available is through the airport Tamika.
Here, people change their aircraft which drops them off at an improvised local runway at one of the villages near the mountain range. From there it is a five day hike to the top of Carstensz Expedition Indonesia, adored by mountaineers from all over the world.
