How to Fix Water Damaged Walls

    • 1). Remove any loose wall materials that have been affected by the water damage. You can use a putty knife to get rid of peeling paint, damaged drywall tape or loosened joint compound.

    • 2). Cut away larger damaged areas with a drywall saw. If the drywall pieces are sticking out due to the water damage, they will need to be removed with the saw. To cut away the piece, you will need to cut across the sheet along the seams. In order to ensure that you remove the entire damaged section, mark your cuts at least 2 inches away from the bulging area.

    • 3). Remove any drywall nails or screws that may be holding the sheet in place. Once they have been removed, you can pull away the damaged sheet and dispose of it.

    • 4). Measure the same size sheet of drywall as the water damaged piece you have removed. Make sure that the thickness is the same as well. Fit it into the spot and check that the seams line up.

    • 5). Use ready mix joint compound to finish securing the drywall to the wall. Take the putty knife and apply a coat about ½ inches thick to the seam of the new drywall section. Pull drywall tape over the seam and skim the compound several times over the tape until you have covered the area completely. After drying, apply another coat of the joint compound.

    • 6). Paint the wall once the compound has dried. You should apply a sealer coat in order to ensure that no leftover moisture damages the wall any further.
