How to Create a Syphon

    • 1). Place one end of the tubing into the container with liquid. Make sure the end of the tubing rests in the bottom of the container. When the liquid in the container runs dry, the siphon action ceases.

    • 2). Stretch the tubing out to the other container. The fluid will flow inside the tube from the first container to the second.

    • 3). Place the empty container at a level below the level of the liquid in the other container. Place a loop in the end of the tubing nearest the empty container. Apply suction to the end of the tube closest to the loop using your mouth or a compressed bulb. Keep the end of the tubing level with the liquid in the container to slow the travel of the liquid from the filled container.

    • 4). When the liquid in the tube reaches the loop, stop the suction immediately. This is especially important if you are using your mouth as the suction device. Then raise the tubing slightly above the level of the liquid in the filled container.

    • 5). Lower the end of the tubing with the loop in it below the level of the liquid in the filled container, and place it in the empty container. Straighten out the loop in the tubing, and gravity will allow the liquid in the tubing to flow into the empty container. As the fluid in the tubing travels downward into the container, the suction will continue on the other end of the tubing. Allow the fluid to flow between the two containers until you have recovered the amount you need, and then raise the end of the tubing from the destination container above the level of the liquid in the original container to stop the flow.
