How to Seal Boat Struts
- 1). Remove the fiberglass that covers the nuts that hold the struts in place using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Tighten the nuts using your wrench, and use your scraper to chip away any loose materials that may be attached to the hull area surrounding the struts.
- 2). Sand the area on and around the struts after all loose material has been removed. Sanding will remove any excess materials that were not removed during the scraping process and will ensure that the sealant has an area onto which it can properly adhere once it is applied.
- 3). Apply the sealant to the boat struts using an industrial sealant and paintbrush. Apply the sealant using an even coat, and work slowly to ensure that all areas of the struts are adequately covered. Speak with your local boating store to determine the best type of sealant for your particular model and the area of water your boat will traverse. For added protection, apply a second coat of sealant once the first coat has completely dried.
- 4). Replace the fiberglass cover to your boat struts using your Phillips-head screwdriver.
