For those people that crave meat and want to have a healthier diet, then salmon is the answer for them.
Salmon is packed full of good healthy fats and the Omega 3 oils that we keep hearing about in every form of media every day.
As there are many types to catch and purchase - Which ones are best suited for you? There are essentially two types of salmon - wild and farm raised.
Farm raised salmon is typical of what you are going to purchase at most seafood outlets.
They are bred and controlled in the environment of a fish farm.
Farm raised salmon get a bad rap in the media as they are said to have added hormones which contain harmful ingredients like PCB's and the like.
PCB's are only stored in the fat portion of the salmon so you should always trim the skin and all visible fats just to be sure.
Wild Salmon are feeding on fresh ocean, river, lake and natural stream fish food and are going to be free of these harmful ingredients and might just be a better choice if available.
This is great news for all the fishing people reading this.
But maybe the timing is not right for you to go fishing of late, and as you love cooking and eating salmon knowing the health benefits will be of great help to you also.
The 7 most common Salmon around the world that you'll be catching or purchasing are:

  • CohoSalmon - Silver Salmon

  • Sockeye - Red Salmon (mostly a plankton feeder)
  • Pink Salmon (smaller version of the pacific salmon)
  • Chum Salmon (has a paler flesh which sets it apart in flavour)

Salmon is known as the meaty fish in the seafood world as it has a firmer and denser flesh being much chewier than that found in other types of fish.
'Meaty' fish is known for satisfying those who may have normally enjoyed beef over reef.
The similarity between salmon and red meat like beef stands out most when grilling.
After cooking salmon on the barbeque grill, you can easily experience the chewiness and firmness of the salmon flesh like that of red meat such as beef.
The great news is that salmon meat is healthier than red meat as it is way lower in saturated fats.
There are many ways to prepare salmon.
You can cook it whole or fillet your salmon and then cut those larger fillets into steaks or cutlets but not forgetting to remove all of those tricky pin bones first.
