Smoking accelerates skin damage

For smokers, the biggest anti-aging skin care regimen they can implement is to stop smoking. Despite how many products or treatments they undergo to regain a youthful glow, all attempts may be moot if they continue to smoke.

If one begins smoking in their twenties, they will not see immediate facial signs of aging. But the damage is underway, and in time, will appear. And it won't be a natural progression of aging, either.

According to researchers, skin damage for smokers quickly progresses as compared to nonsmokers.

In fact, this research has been around for some time now - it started back in 1965. The report highlighted the "smoker's face" theory which included the following characteristics:

• Wrinkles
• Grayness tone
• Paleness appearance

When cigarette smoke flows inside a body, it affects the blood vessels in the skin - vessels are tapered and the blood flow is slowed down. The result of this exacerbates the limited amount of oxygen and nutrients which needs to nourish the uppermost layer of skin. Vitamin A and C is among the many nutrients which the skin is starved of. And Vitamin C is a critical component for skin protection against free radicals.

Conversely, the above bodily reaction creates an enzyme that ultimately leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. These two entities make the skin look toned and healthy. By destroying these important fibers, the elasticity and youthful glow of a person's skin will be compromised.

Research has revealed a smoker's skin may very well look 10 years or more older than their actual age. Smoking can take a toll on a person's skin.

The face of a smoker is not the only area which ages. Other parts of the body may include:

• Arms
• Eyes
• Dcollet
• Mouth
• Neck

Deep wrinkles can appear in these spots. The areas of the mouth and eyes are prone to premature wrinkling from the frequent puckering of the lips and squinting of the eyes to inhale a cigarette.

If one decides to stop smoking, they may not be able to correct all the damage done, but they can certainly make their skin look more luminous by implementing the following:

• Sunscreen
• Anti-aging skincare routine
• Vitamins and supplements
• A balanced diet with fruits and vegetables
• Staying hydrated with water

When one stops smoking, they will halt further damage and get back on track for more youthful skin. And everyone deserves that.
