DIY Preservative for Cedar Siding
- 1). Fill a plastic cleaning bucket with water. Dip a stiff bristle brush into the water.
- 2). Scrub the cedar siding thoroughly with the damp brush. Add a couple squirts of liquid dish detergent to the water, if the cedar siding is extremely dirty.
- 3). Spray the siding with water from a garden hose to rinse off the detergent solution. Allow the siding to thoroughly dry.
- 4). Apply a coat of water-repellent preservative solvent to the cedar siding using a roller brush. Use a paintbrush coat the lap and butt joints, edges and ends of boards, as well as below doors and window frames.
- 5). Allow the water-repellent preservative solvent to dry on the cedar siding, according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply another coat of water-repellent preservative solvent to the cedar siding using the roller brush.
- 6). Allow the second coat of water-repellent preservative solvent to dry, according to the manufacturer's directions. Applying the second coat protects the siding from weathering, extending the life of the siding.
