How to Install a Standard Flush Toilet

    • 1). Turn off the supply line going to the toilet. You can do this by following the line from the bottom of the tank to wall. There you will see a turnoff valve. Turn it clockwise until it is tight. Then, flush the toilet and hold down the handle until the tank is emptied. If water still runs, use your wrench to further tighten the valve. Once the tank is drained, unscrew your supply line from the wall.

    • 2). Unscrew the mounting bolts from the floor. These are the two brass bolts that hold the toilet to the drain. Use your wrench to loosen and remove the bolt. If you find that the bolt will not budge, spray WD-40 on the bolt. The lubricant will break down the grime and make it easier to unscrew.

    • 3). When the bolts are out, lift the toilet off the drain and set it on the old towel. This will get it out of the way for disposal. At this point, take a large wad of paper towels and plug the drain hole. This will help to prevent sewer fumes from escaping.

    • 4). Clean the drain flange. Toilets are mounted to their drain using a wax ring with a sleeve to guide waste into the drain. The wax ring is non-toxic and can stand up to the water pressure involved with flushing a toilet. If there is excess wax stuck to the drain, use your shop knife or putty knife to scrape the rim. Then, spray the rim with WD-40 and wipe it off.

Unpack your toilet bowl and flip it upside down. Take your wax ring and apply it, flange side up, to the drain hole of the bowl. Press around the ring's plastic holder so it fits snug to the porcelain.

    • 6). Remove the paper towels from the drain and throw it away. Take your toilet bowl and sit it on the drain. Using your new mounting bolts, screw them into the floor tightly. This will secure the bowl to the floor.

    • 7). Mount your tank to the bowl by lining up the tank's exit hole to the entry of the bowl. Use the second set of brass bolts to lock the tank down to the bowl.

    • 8). Attach your supply line to the wall valve and connect it to the opening at the bottom of the tank. Turn the water supply back on by turning the valve counterclockwise.

    • 9). Install the toilet seat. Line up the seat bolts with the holes on the bowl. Use the nuts and screw the seat in from underneath the tank.
