How to Install a Video Decoder in Media Center

    • 1). Download the Media Center video decoder that you would like to install. Video decoders, or codecs, for Media Center can be downloaded from the Microsoft website or NVIDIA (see Resources.)

    • 2). Go to the "Downloads" folder on your computer by opening the "Start" menu, double-click "Computer," then double-click the "C" drive. Double-click "Users," then double-click the folder of the user who was logged in when the decoder was downloaded. Double-click "Downloads."

    • 3). Double-click the Windows Media Center video decoder that you downloaded to the computer. When you double-click the file, the installation wizard automatically opens.

    • 4). Follow the instructions provided in each screen of the video decoder installation wizard. When you reach the final screen, choose "Install Now." The installation wizard saves the video decoder files to an appropriate folder on the computer's hard drive.

    • 5). Launch Windows Media Center as normal. Once installed to the computer, the video decoder automatically integrates with Media Center and allows you to open DVDs or other files that were formerly unreadable in the program.
