How to Make Yarn Dolls

    • 1). Choose a yarn color for the doll's body and wrap this yarn around the width of the book approximately 40 to 45 times. Make sure you wrap the yarn loosely to enable the yarn to slip off the book.

    • 2). Cut a six-inch piece of contrasting colored yarn and slip it under the yarn wrapped around the book. Position this short piece of yarn at the bridge of the book and tie it tightly in a double knot around the wrapped yarn to secure the wrapped yarn together. Leave these contrasting yarn tails for attaching the hair later.

    • 3). Slip the wrapped yarn off the book and hold the yarn loops taut between the tied point and the opposite end. Cut through the yarn loops at the other end.

    • 4). Make the yarn doll's head by tightly tying a five-inch length of contrasting yarn approximately one inch below the first tie. Trim the contrasting yarn off near the knot.

    • 5). Create the doll's arms by separating a small amount of yarn on each outer edge of the doll's body. Make sure the arms are the same size with the same amount of yarn making up each arm. Use a four-inch piece of contrasting yarn to tie the ends of each arm mid-way down the yarn doll's body. Trim the contrasting yarn off near the knots and the arms off approximately 1/2-inch below the ties for the hands.

    • 6). Use another six-inch piece of contrasting yarn to tie the doll's body about even with the point where the ties on the hands are. Tie this yarn into a knot first and then make a nice bow as a belt for the doll.

    • 7). Leave the doll as it is to make a girl doll in a dress. To make a doll with pants, separate the yarn extending down from the last tie in half and tie each half with a four-inch piece of contrasting yarn near the bottom ends of the yarn to make the ankles. Trim the contrasting yarn off near the knots and the yarn ends off evenly for the feet.

    • 8). Add hair to the top of the head. Use scraps of a different yarn color to make long or short hair. Position the hair on the head and use the contrasting yarn tied at the top of the head to tie the hair to the top of the doll's head. Tie this knot very tightly and trim off the ends near the knot.

    • 9). Make eyes and nose by threading a short piece of contrasting yarn around the yarn on the face of the doll at the points where you want the eyes and nose. Tie the contrasting yarn tightly into a knot and trim the ends off very close to the knot to finish.
