How to Save Money While Roaming Abroad With Your Cell Phone

    • 1). Make phone calls only when absolutely necessary. Keep phone calls short and concise to avoid talking too many minutes. Remain mindful of your roaming per-minute rate.

    • 2). Include as much information as possible in each text you send -- without going over the character limit. Sending dozens of short texts from abroad makes the bill you see when you get home significantly higher than if you are comprehensive and succinct in your messages.

    • 3). Visit a local cell phone company in your foreign country or city and investigate options for purchasing a local cell phone for calls you make to hotels, restaurants and people you meet while traveling. Although having your U.S. phone number abroad is advantageous for people in the United States who want to call you, it does you little good when making or receiving calls in a foreign country.

    • 4). Use computer-based software such as Skype or the web-based Google Voice for calling home whenever possible. These programs are free to download, cheap to use and are usually already installed on computers in Internet cafes.
