How to Go Green When Snow Skiing

    • 1). Visit a ski resort taking measures to protecting the environment. Aspen, Colorado, for example, powers its snow-grooming machines with biodiesel fuel and offsets the amount of electricity it uses with renewable wind farm energy. Others have adopted rigorous recycling programs, feature a free shuttle service from the resort to the ski lifts and use low-emissions snowmakers. (See Resources)

    • 2). Choose "green" ski equipment whenever possible. For example, a ski boot like the "Scarpa Hurricane" features parts such as its shell and strap band that are light weight, strong, flexible and constructed of mostly renewable raw materials.

    • 3). Wear ski clothes like sweaters, pants and jackets constructed of recycled and recyclable materials. The garments come in such an array of vibrant colors and cozy textures, you'd never know that their polyester fabrics come from materials like used soda bottles and recycled clothing.

    • 4). Give snow skiing equipment and clothing that you no longer want to friends who are just starting out in the sport or donate the items to charity or a local Freecycle group instead of tossing them out.

    • 5). Use reusable dishes and cups if you plan to picnic at the top of the mountain. If you'd rather use disposable tableware, opt for biodegradable paper goods created from recycled materials and ensure you're bringing all of your trash back down the mountain to dispose of properly.
