How to Clean an AC Evaporation System
- 1). Turn off the system at the thermostat. As an extra precaution, you can turn off the breaker, but this is not required. You will not be in danger of electrocution from a properly operating unit.
- 2). Locate the evaporator coil access panel. This is the side of the top part of the air handler. Remove any metal foil tape, and remove the access panel using a screwdriver. There are several quarter-inch screws holding the panel in place.
- 3). Pull the access panel from the unit. You will see an A-frame-shaped evaporator coil.
- 4). Remove the lid from the can of no-rinse coil cleaner. Insert the straw into the nozzle, and spray the foam on the coils. Cover the coils entirely and evenly. It will immediately begin to defoam and rinse into the drain pan.
- 5). Replace the access panel, and tighten the screws with a screwdriver. Replace metal foil tape if tape was removed to access the panel.
- 6). Turn on the breaker, if necessary, and the thermostat.
