Capital One MTV Visa Card Review
Like Citigroup's mtvU Platinum Select Visa Card for College Students, this card from Capital One is aimed at MTV fans. However, it's slightly less complicated than Citi's version and the rewards redemption gives you more options, but the APR is a lot higher.
You earn five points for every dollar spent on entertainment, two points per dollar at restaurants, and one point everywhere else. You can also earn 25 bonus points each billing period by paying your bill on time (Citi's card has a similar good-behavior bonus).
Points can be redeemed for MTV merchandise, including tickets to MTV events and award shows. You can also redeem your points for cash, gift cards at major retailers, and travel.
When you get a credit card that pays rewards in points, it's always important to know exactly how much the points are worth in dollars.
Unfortunately, you won't have access to Capital One's No Hassle Points website to see that until after you get the card.
By comparison, Capital One's Student Rewards Card, which has the same APR and no annual fee, pays you back in good, simple, old-fashioned cash. I prefer that card - you can always pay cash for MTV stuff if you want it.
The APR is a sky high 24.9 percent. If you do decide to get this card, make sure you never revolve a balance on it - charge on it to get the points, but then pay the balance off every month.
Recommendation
I recommend Capital One's Student Rewards Card over this one because it's simpler to understand and the rewards are more clear-cut.
