What Flowers Do You Need to Make a Lei?
- Leis are created by drawing a long needle and string (or multiple strands of thread) through the thickest part of a bloom's base, and often through the center of the bloom. The flowers must be able to withstand being punctured, along with the stress of any weight as they hang on the thread.
- Flowers that have volume and look good from many angles are best for making leis. They will give you a rounded, lush look, as opposed to a flat flower that is only attractive from one angle. For example, consider an orchid bloom in comparison with a Gerber daisy.
- Lei flowers must be able to stand up to a lot of handling as they are strung, transported and worn. Look for flowers that will not discolor or disintegrate easily, and can survive for many hours to several days after they are cut from the stem.
