  The hydrangea plant bears small flowers that come in many pastel colors such as white, cream, purple, blue and pink. The fragrant flowers grow together in a cluster that creates a large ball of flowers. These flowers are often given as gifts or displayed along front yard walkways.   Lilacs look like purple hydrangeas. The flowers grow on a bush and the foliage is dark green like that of the hydrangea. However, the main similarity is in the growth patterns. Lilacs bear small flowers that grow in clusters just like those of the hydrangeas. Some clusters are circular and others are conical, depending on the species of lilac. Lilacs also have very soft petals and a strong fragrance as do hydrangeas.

  The butterfly bush also resembles the hydrangea, with dark green foliage and fragrant flowers that grow in clusters, although butterfly bush flowers are more conical in shape. The flowers are small with soft petals like those of the hydrangea. The color variations are also similar. Butterfly bush flowers can be pink, white, purple and red. Some butterfly bushes also produce orange flowers. This bush attracts butterflies and other insects.

  Snowball flowers look just like hydrangeas, but they grow in clusters that resemble a fist-sized snowball. These flowers also earned their name because of the pure white petals. However, the centers of these flowers are yellow and foliage is very green. Snowball flower bushes are often mistaken for hydrangeas.
