- 1). Put the pots in their permanent locations before adding heavy soil. Choose sites with bright sun and air circulation for best plant and flower growth. Moving the pots with soil and plants may prove difficult.
- 2). Line the bottom 10 to 15 inches of the pots with non-soil materials like wood chips, wood blocks, gravel or rocks and stones. These materials fill the space, cost less than soil and catch water to encourage better drainage.
- 3). Mix a potting foundation with 1 part organic compost to 1 part garden loam or potting soil. This mixture provides rich, loose and moist soil for potted plants, which dry more quickly than in-ground plants. Turn 5-10-10 fertilizer into the soil for more starting nutrition.
- 4). Fill the pots to within 1 to 1 1/2 inches of the tops with soil mixture. Plant a range of annuals, perennials and vines in the pots.
