How to Install Rope to Spinning Reels

    Heavy Monofilament

    • 1). Attach the spinning reel to a spinning rod. A spinning rod is a type of fishing rod that does not have a trigger hanging below the handle.

    • 2). Pick up the end of the monofilament line and place it through the guide on the tip of the fishing rod. Then insert it through each of the other rod guides.

    • 3). Open the spinning reel bale by flipping it upward.

    • 4). Wrap the monofilament line around the spinning reel spool two times. Make a knot so the line is tight around the spool.

    • 5). Reel line onto the spool until it is 1/8 of an inch from the rim of the spool.

    • 6). Pick up the scissors and cut the monofilament so that about 24 inches hangs from the end of the rod.

    Braided Line

    • 1). Choose a monofilament line to be used as backing on the spinning reel. Twelve-pound test monofilament is a good choice.

    • 2). Place the monofilament line through all of the rod guides, beginning at the tip and working your way down to the reel. Wrap the monofilament line around the spool twice, and then tie a knot to hold the line on the spool. Reel monofilament onto the spinning reel until you had added 50 yards. Cut the line 2 feet beyond the rod tip.

    • 3). Tie a blood knot (see Resources) to attach the monofilament line and the braided line.

    • 4). Reel the monofilament and braided line onto the reel. Quit reeling when the braided line is 1/8 of an inch below the spool rim.

    • 5). Use a scissors to cut the braided line 15 inches beyond the rod tip.
