Here's the thing: being in shape and being healthy really all boils down to two things: a healthy diet and proper exercise.

Then again, you and I both know that these two seemingly simple concepts are more complex than they appear.

There are many theories as to what the best healthy diet should be followed and what the best form of exercise you should do. A lot of people are taking advantage of this by opening up health clubs or membership gyms.

But if you have to choose between a healthy diet and proper exercise, what would you choose? Well, most people would most likely choose the former. Aside from the fact that exercise means exerting a lot of physical efforts, dieting is the lesser evil, so to speak.

Im sure youve seen just how many easy weight loss diets there are in the market right now. Each one more tempting than the next! But in order to get the benefits that you really want (disease prevention, looking and feeling better, etc.), you need to separate the truth from the myths, the legit ones from the scams.

We all react to food differently, keep that in mind. The question of which ones work efficiently for you is still a matter of debate.

Heres a tip though: go with the healthy diets that has stood the test of time. For example, the Mediterranean diet has been around since the 1950s. Countless international research has also shown that the health benefits that its believed to cause are really factual.

Now, if you are a Mediterranean diet or a healthy diet newbie, Im sure youre having a hard time maintaining it. But you know? There are three simple steps to make sure that you stick to your newfound healthy diet.

Your Three-Step Plan to a Healthy Diet

1. Dont stress on the calories

A lot of people think that as long as you stay away from calories, youre on a healthy diet. That is simply false and honestly, quite dangerous.

When it comes to finding and keeping a healthy diet, dont count calories! Focus on the freshness of the food in front of you. Fresh foods can be seen, smelled and tasted. Theres a distinction to it- use your senses!

2. Start slow and gradual

Like in quitting smoking, going cold turkey on a new healthy diet is just not effective at all. It is unrealistic to expect that your whole attitude towards eating will change in less than one night.

Start slow. Used to ordering a large combo meal in a fast food chain? Well, go ala carte. Drinking five cans of soda a day? Cut back. The key is to gradually reduce the unhealthy foods or drinks that you take. Sooner or later, youll notice that you are eating healthier.

3. Dont deprive yourself- indulge!

One of the reasons why some people refuse to try a healthy diet or they easily give up on it is because they think that they cant enjoy the foods they used to enjoy! But of course, you have to do so in moderation.

Feeling sad? Grab a chocolate bar to release those endorphins. Celebrating a promotion? Go ahead, order that meaty pizza.

A healthy diet is all about feeling and looking good in a long term basis. Its not a crash diet or a fad you will join for a couple of months.
