Anywhere But Here Lord, Anywhere But Here

John dropped out of school, before he turned fifteen.
His mother, an addict, is usually no where to be seen.
He raised himself and his little sister, with no one else's help.
He wants a better life for them, not this living hell.
From dirty, cracked windows, he looks out over the city, and thinks to himself, anywhere but here, anywhere but here.
Mary lives in the suburbs, has a nice house, and two new cars.
But it's all just material things, and those won't mend a broken heart.
Her husband has become cruel, he won't let her go.
She knows she has to escape, but she still loves him though.
She sits and stares out her front windows, and with tears, she thinks to herself, anywhere but here lord, anywhere but here.
Me, I go to work, at a job that I hate.
Like a lot of people, this seems to be our fate.
Fifteen minutes for my break, pull out a cigarette and sit outside.
This is not what I thought I'd become, somewhere I left my hopes, my dreams behind.
I need to feel alive again, take chances, start over new.
From a plastic chair, I sit and think, anywhere but here lord, anywhere but here.
I know there are lots of us, who feel this same way.
Anywhere but here, is a constant thought, until things change.
Sometimes we stay, either feeling we're doing the right thing, or from fear.
Change can sometimes be a little frightening, but until we do, that thought will continue, like a repetitive voice, anywhere but here lord, anywhere but here..
