- 1). Open "Start," then go to "Run." Type in "regedit" without quotes. Press the "Enter" key.
- 2). Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents" in the left panel of the registry editor.
- 3). Right-click on "OOBETimer" in the right panel of the window. Select "Modify."
- 4). Change any digit of this value to deactivate Windows XP. Close the registry editor.
- 5). Click "Start" then "Run." Type the command "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" without quotes into the box. Press "Enter."
- 6). Select "Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows." You will not actually be calling a representative, but you must use this interface to change the product key. Click the "Next" button.
- 7). Select "Change Product key." Type the key you are changing to into the "New key" box. Press "Update."
- 8). Choose "Remind me later" if you are returned to the prior window. Restart the computer to complete the change.
