Local breast cancer survivors, family and friends take their journey to the pavement
Redlands Community Hospital hosted the ultimate ‘Girls' Day Out' for more than 60 local women for the 13th Annual ‘Susan G. Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure' event. The women laced up their running shoes, then boarded a charter bus to the race this past weekend in Temecula.
Breast cancer awareness advocate and owner of Cré Hair Studio, Heather Mogel hosted games, including "Name-That-Tune", Breast Cancer Bingo and other activities and provided prizes to participants during the ‘girls only' road trip. After the 3.1 run/walk, the women were treated to a special post-race lunch at the parent's home of a Redlands Community Hospital employee. The outdoor luncheon was decked in white and pink and attendees enjoyed appetizers, sandwiches, desserts, and beverages.
"The race and ‘Girls Day Out' event was so uplifting and had such a tremendous sense of family, camaraderie, and support," said Cherie Towers, six year breast cancer survivor, race participant and director of volunteer services at Redlands Community Hospital. "The sea of people was unbelievable; everyone was really relaxed and ready to conquer the race and have a great time."
Thanks to a $55,652 grant from the Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to the Redlands Community Hospital, the hospital was able to host the ‘Girls' Day Out' breast cancer awareness event for the 50 race participants. The grant is part of an initiative to raise awareness for women's breast health issues and provide diagnostic services, including breast ultrasounds, biopsies and MRIs. The grant focuses on reaching local women under the age of 40 who are uninsured or are underinsured. To determine if you are eligible to benefit from this community grant, please call (909) 793-4399.
"This event brought a lot of people closer—some of the participants didn't know each other, but in the end, the experience created newfound friendships," says Nikyah Pfeiffer, team captain and Redlands Community Hospital marketing manager. "The ‘Girls Day Out' allowed breast cancer survivors, family members and friends a day of celebration and awareness. It was truly a memorable event."
