- 1). Move the wood table outside into the sun until it dries. Natural sunlight is the best solution for drying porous surfaces such as wood. If you cannot move the table, or if you lack sunlight, see the "Tips" section.
- 2). Brush off the tabletop with a broom or cloth to remove fungal spores from the surface. For a more thorough removal, vacuum the tabletop with a hose extension. If you vacuum, though, immediately clean out the filter to prevent spores from growing inside the unit.
- 3). Pour 8 to 10 ounces of trisodium phosphate or washing soda (sodium carbonate) into a gallon of water and mix it thoroughly. You can find these chemical solutions at janitorial supply retailers and home improvement stores.
- 4). Apply the cleaning solution to a nonabrasive cloth or sponge, and scrub your wood tabletop to kill off all traces of mildew. Scrub the tabletop again with a damp cloth or sponge to rinse away the cleaning solution.
- 5). Dry the wood table again. Moisture and wood present the perfect breeding conditions for mildew, so always keep your wood tabletop as dry as possible to prevent the problem from recurring. As an added measure, you can apply a mildew-resistant wood finish to your tabletop.
