Your Independent Child is Ready to Be Potty Trained

Your once clingy baby has blossomed into an "I do it," super independent 2-year-old.
While this new behavior makes you proud and, at times, impatient, you can channel it to help her to become toilet-proficient.
One indication that your child is exercising new independence is her observant nature.
She has more of an understanding of her surroundings.
She also recognizes why people use the toilet and is interested in this process.
Secondly, a child around 2 years of age engages in side-by-side play.
She is happy to play next to another kid or alone.
Most at this age do not actually play with other children.
Third, your child likes to be the leader.
She likes to have other people do what she does.
She might like to see you mimic her clapping her hands, touching her head, and so on.
She also likes to imitate others, including what they do on the toilet.
Lastly, many children around age 2 prefer, to some degree, to dress themselves.
Your child may struggle to get her left shoe on her right foot, but enjoys the challenge, even though it's difficult.
Encourage your toddler to dress herself, even though this means waiting some time to get out the door.
Resist the urge to take over and fix her when she isn't done trying to get dressed.
This approach may make her back off from doing other things on her own, like work at potty training.
You'll notice your child pulling a switcheroo on you, as her "Don't help me" attitude becomes "I can't.
I need help.
" Your toddler may act as if she were a baby, saying that she wants to be carried and refuse to walk like a big kid.
Some parents think this is a willful change of mood when it actually is part of a 2-year-old's growth process.
Even though you want your little one to become less reliant on you, you have to roll with these moments of indecisiveness.
Your compassion will pay off in the end with a potty trained child.
