It has long been thought that there is no money in writing poetry, it is a labour of love, something that you do because you're passionate about it.
Poetry was something that you did because you enjoyed sharing your passion for your subject, rhyme and verse with other individuals that shared your same passion.
You might get lucky enough to get published, but you wouldn't make a living at it.
You just had the joy of knowing that your written word was out there for others to continue to enjoy.
Poetry in Advertising Advertising is an area that poetry has some sort of possible fund producing possibilities.
There are currently two prominent advertisers that are using poetry in their advertising due to the emotional appeal of this style of writing.
David Morrissey narrated an ad for McDonald's while Pete Postelthwaite narrated a poetic ad for Cathedral City cheddar cheese.
Other companies that have used poetry in their advertising include the AA, Center Parcs, Waitrose and the Prudential.
How do the Poets Feel? Many poets aren't thrilled with the advent of poetry use in advertising.
There feeling is that use of poetry in such things as advertising cheapens the medium.
Just like using popular music in advertising can give the feeling of degrading it.
Some poets believe that as long as the poetry is used respectfully, it can retain its integrity, thereby making the use 'okay'.
To Autumn by Keats was used by Waitrose in one of their commercials while Leisure, by William Henry Davies was used by Center Parcs.
Some poetry is written specifically for certain ad campaigns.
Some poets have no issue with writing them, while others will not write for advertising for any price.
Some poets are discriminating as far as who they will write poetry for, for instance, writing for a financial institution or a medical institution might be acceptable, however writing poetry for a simple fast food restaurant such as McDonalds is something that might never be acceptable to them.
Why Poetry? Poetry is the written word driven by passion.
This makes it very powerful.
If this medium is used in a respectful and coordinated manner, it can be a very good advertising tool.
With poetry, the power of suggestion gets a good boost by the passion of words.
This can make an otherwise semi effective commercial much more effective at reaching people's emotions and prompting them to respond in a positive fashion.
