How to Recover a Partition Table in Linux

    • 1). Copy down the output of "fdisk -l" to a sheet of paper. You will have to run the command as root.

    • 2). Reboot your system and start from the Live CD. Run "fdisk /dev/hda" where hda would be replaced with the name of the hard disk your are recovering.

    • 3). Press "d" and delete all the existing partitions on the corrupted disk.

    • 4). Re-create all the damaged partitions and tag them properly with the data you wrote down from before. Double-check to make sure that everything is exact so you can still access your data later.

    • 5). Press "w" and hit "Enter" to save your partition tables to the disk. Restart your copy of Linux. You may have trouble with your boot loader on reboot, so you will need to select which partition to boot from or even reinstall your boot loader if need be off the Live CD.
