- 2). Understand New York City building codes and command a working knowledge of the tools of the trade, diagram drafting and basic plumbing theory. You can learn these skills at trade schools or through apprenticeships.
- 3). Complete five years' experience under direct supervision of a master plumber, including one year working in New York City. In lieu of the five years of experience, you can also complete a state-registered training program.
- 4). Submit your registration application online at the NYC Buildings website. See the Resources section for a direct link.
- 5). Appear at the Licensing Unit in person. Ten days after you receive a confirmation email stating that your application has been received, you can call (212) 566-4100 to schedule an appointment with the Licensing Unit.
- 6). Bring all required materials to your appointment. This includes photo identification; your original Social Security card; original completion certificates for any training or apprenticeship programs; notarized affidavits from past employers with letters including your job title; description of your duties and employment dates and a statement from your supervisor; a Social Security History of Earnings statement; a printed version of your application; and a $50 application fee, payable by cash, check or money order.
