"Race cars have inspired the imagination of countless young fans, going all the way back to the days when cars were first pitted against each other," reads the Auto Racing & Car Themes page on the Kids Decorating Ideas website. But that fascination does not always end with childhood; instead, it lasts a lifetime for many men and women and manifests itself in ideas for decorating with race cars.

    Decorating Kids' Rooms

Race-car-themed bedding sets come in all colors, patterns and styles, and children's beds themselves come in the shape of race cars. Area rugs that feature tracks and roads provide a place to play. Racing paint schemes vary from checkered flags to bold, primary colors that combine all of the racing flags. Apply stencils to walls and furniture to create murals of a day at the track. Hang flags, helmets and other memorabilia as artwork. For a child who does the pinewood derby, soap box derby or other competitive hobbies, showcase the trophies, ribbons and photographs as the main decorations.

    Decorating Teens' Rooms

As children get older, make room on shelves to turn their old race car toys into decorative accessories. Put the small die-cast metal cars into glass cabinets, or build a deep desk or table with a glass top to hold and display them. A shelf along the wall also can house the model cars as the collection grows. Trade in the race car bed for a custom bed made from the front of a classic car. Change the paint scheme to a simple black-and-white pattern, or use the colors of a favorite driver as a starting point. Frame autographs and collector cards for wall art.

    Decorating Adult Spaces

Adults need not hide a passion for auto racing in the garage. Display your collection of model cars in the living room or den. Turn an old bench seat from a classic ride into a couch. Make racing seats into easy chairs on either side of the couch. Engines make for eye-catching coffee and end tables. Make shadow boxes out of old trophies, newspaper clippings and photographs from favorite races or racers. Race car decorating ideas for artwork include hubcaps, mirrors, decals, neon bar signs, and posters featuring favorite drivers and their sponsors.
