Example Problems for Different Number Styles:

Example problem 1: What is |-48|?

Solution:

The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0.

On a number line, -48 is 48 units to the left of 0.

The distance between -48 and 0 is 48 units.

So, |-48| is 48.

Answer: |-48| is 48.

Example problem 2: Ethan biked '19 1/3 ' miles on Saturday and '9 2/3 ' miles on Sunday. How much farther did Ethan bike on Saturday than on Sunday?

Solution:

Find how much farther Ethan biked on Saturday by subtracting '9 2/3' from '19 1/3' .

'19 1/3 - 9 2/3 =?'

Rewrite 19 1/3, so that you can subtract.

'19 1/3 = 18 + 3/3 + 1/3 = 18 4/3'

Now subtract. Remember to subtract whole numbers from whole numbers and fractions from fractions.

'18 4/3 - 9 2/3 = 9 2/3'

This answer is in simplest form.

Ethan biked '9 2/3' miles farther on Saturday than on Sunday.

Answer: Ethan biked '9 2/3' miles farther on Saturday than on Sunday.

Practice problem 1: If a cell phone costs 75.08 dollars, how much would it cost to buy 2 cell phones?

Practice problem 2: Alexander has '1/2' of a cup of powdered sugar. He sprinkles '1/2 ' of the sugar onto a plate of brownies and sprinkles the rest onto a plate of lemon cookies. How much sugar does Alexander sprinkle on the brownies?

Practice problem 3: Tom worked at a bake sale and sold 473 peach pies and 24 brownies. How many baked goods did he sell in all?

Practice problem 4: Tucker got on a train and traveled 6.96 miles. Then he switched to a different train and traveled 6.50 miles more. How far did Tucker travel in all?
