How to Secure Your Home While on Vacation
The holidays are a busy time for criminals, especially those who are looking to break into homes while the homeowners are away.
There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risks of your home being burglarized while you are on vacation.
- The first thing you want to do is to make sure your home security alarm is working properly.
Your home security alarm needs to be checked regularly, at least once a year, just like a smoke alarm. - Let your home security monitoring company know that you will be on vacation for a few days.
Give them a list of contacts in case of an emergency at your home.
It's also good to let your local police department know that you will be on vacation. - If you have a neighbor you can trust, let them know that you will be on vacation.
Your neighbor can keep an eye on the house while you're gone. - Have your newspaper and mail delivery stopped.
If a criminal sees a bunch of newspapers piled up outside your door, he/she will know that no one has been home for several days and your home becomes an attractive target for intruders. - Arrange to have a car parked in the driveway while you're gone.
It could be your neighbor's car or you can leave your car at home while on vacation. - Make sure all your doors and windows are locked.
If you have sliding doors, make sure that you place a metal bar or wooden stick into the track so the door cannot be slid open by an intruder.
Also make sure the door cannot be lifted up off the track. - Turn your motion detector light on so that it will be activated at night.
If you have a porch or driveway light with a timer, you can set the timer to go on periodically throughout the night to make it look like someone is home.
You can do the same for interior lights and your TV. - Keep the message on your answering machine the same.
Don't leave a message saying that you are away on vacation.
Set your answering machine to pick up after two or three rings instead of letting it ring five or more times, indicating that no one is home.
Once you take these necessary steps, you can go on vacation with peace of mind knowing that your home and possessions are being protected.
