Style Tips for All Stages of Motherhood

Motherhood has amazing stages but during this time so does your wardrobe. The way you dress from the very beginning says a lot, whether we care to admit it or not. Recently, I went out to breakfast with my husband and our two kids, ages five and ten months wearing my favorite dark jeans, a sweater and heels. Yes, I still wear heels but that isn't for everyone but it has become part of my basic, everyday look.

Going out can be a chore but we have a routine, or rather I do. Getting myself ready, shower included, most times should take me fifteen minutes at best. Since the very beginning of my first pregnancy, I aimed for that effortless look. The one that looks like you put in hours rather than minutes. During breakfast, I noticed a young and attractive couple with a small child of no more than three. The child was nicely dressed and her outfit very thought out as was dad's. Meanwhile, the mother wore sweat pants, her hair in a high messy bun that most likely was done in the car and honestly, I noticed nothing else. I looked around the room and noticed that most moms of small children looked the same. So here is a round of applause for all those amazing and beautiful selfless mothers that morning, because family first is most important. However, a happy woman makes a happy mom and for that here are a few tips to get you buy those first few stages of motherhood in fifteen minutes or less and still look your best.

Because we all know how precious time is now.

1st Trimester

Congrats at this point, if this is your first child, we may see nothing. Others may notice that there pants are just a bit tighter around the waist band. You can continue to use your everyday wardrobe. If you feel there is slight notice, try these few tips in an effort to conceal and be more comfortable.

2nd Trimester

This is my favorite time during pregnancy. You are finally looking pregnant instead of just looking like you may be putting on a bit of weight. Some can continue using their own clothes and still skip out of maternity or you can invest in a few key pieces to carry you through these next few month. Stick to the basics but a basic wardrobe doesn't have to be boring. Check out these tips on upgrading a basic wardrobe. Basics include leggings (maternity or low rise work fine), tunic style shirts, and open cardigans or boyfriend blazers. Do not go overboard buying maternity as your size may or may not change by your third and final trimester.

3rd Trimester

You are in the home stretch and may prefer comfort over style at this point. I urge you not to give up by staying in pajamas all day, though if this is your second or more pregnancy or if you work outside of the home, this may not be an option anyhow. Instead, look into certain fabrics, modal jersey, for example, has an extremely soft, almost silk like hand but it still jersey. Weather permitting, stick to dresses that provide less restriction than pants or denim jeans. If you live in a coolr area, try layering sweaters, scarves and leggings (or dare I say jeggings) with your dress, it is effortless and still stylish.

New Mom

Welcome to the wonderful community of women who dare not wear head to toe white...ever. Ivory, too, can be a beast. You will spend a lot of time indoors during these next few weeks, unless the weather permits you to step outside for an afternoon stroll or to run errands. Make sure you find time to shower, find a beauty routine that works best, and avoid any and all itchy fabrics. Just like in your last trimester, comfort is key and this time, not just for you, but for that baby that most likely will be in your arms all day. But after that, here are a few style tips for new moms.
