    Function

    • The physical files that are included in Windows registries are stored depending on what version of Windows a person has. With Windows 95 and 98, the files are located in two concealed files in the Windows directory, called System.dat and User.dat. These files cannot be directly edited and require the assistance of a tool known as Registry Editor.

    Editing

    • Windows registries can be edited by using the "Registry Editor" component of the program. Users are capable of creating a shortcut to the program to make editing easier, and with this program, they are capable of modifying information, options and settings within the Windows Registry.

    Maintenance

    • When maintaining Windows registries, it is essential to be able to back up and restore the registry. Windows 98 makes a backup registry every time Windows starts. Windows 95 has several hidden files that contain backup information for the registry in case restoration must be done. In the case of corrupted registries, backup mechanisms are necessary when updating and organizing the database.

    Cleaning

    • In order to clean out old data and information from Windows registries, users can utilize a tool that can automate the cleaning and organizing process. The program for this is known as RegClean. Howevers, users can also clean and organize the registry manually as well by deleting single files individually (however, this process is more time-consuming).

    Significance

    • Windows registries are important not only because they store operating-system settings. They also store application settings and user preferences. When screensavers or background settings are changed, this data is saved and stored within the registry. The registry consists of information that allows users to customize Windows to their own specific wishes.
