    Scrub the Free Space on a Drive

    • 1). Back up any important files or folders on the drive, including email accounts and other settings, prior to attempting this operation to prevent unintended loss of data.

    • 2). Obtain and install a disk-scrubbing software package on the system that is to be scrubbed. Follow the prompts for a default installation.

    • 3). Run the scrubbing software, and select the option to scrub the free space on the existing drive without erasing any data. Allow the operation to complete, which may take some time on larger drives with a lot of free space.

    • 4). Restart the computer when the operation has completed, knowing that the only information contained on the system is now what is visible to the operating system.

    Completely Erase a Hard Drive

    • 1). Back up any important files or folders on the drive, including email accounts and other settings, prior to attempting this operation to prevent unintended loss of data.

    • 2). Obtain and install a drive-scrubbing software package. Run the package, and choose the option to create a boot CD to use for the operation. Boot to the CD to begin the operation. Alternately, remove the C drive that is to be scrubbed from the computer that has it installed and attach it to a second machine as a secondary or external drive and run the software from the second machine.

    • 3). Run the option to completely erase the hard drive. Choose the number of times the program is to repeat itself or what named procedure or standard is desired for an operational protocol and begin. Allow several hours for the operation to complete if using advanced options and repeating the process a large number of times.

    • 4). Remove the boot CD and replace it with an operating system disk if using the boot CD option, and restart the computer. Disconnect the hard drive and replace it in the original system, inserting an operating system disk in the optical drive if using the second computer method, and restart the computer.

    • 5). Follow the prompts to install an operating system on the clean drive.
