How to Recycle Containers Into a Cherry Tomato Garden
- 1). Separate the lid from the bottom half of an egg tray.
- 2). Punch a drain hole at the bottom of each of the egg compartments in the tray.
- 3). Fill each compartment with potting soil.
- 4). Sink a couple of cherry tomato seeds half an inch into each compartment.
- 5). Slip the cut-off lid underneath the tray to serve as drip catcher.
- 6). Water the compartments just enough to keep the soil moist. Keep the egg tray indoors until the seeds sprout. Seedlings should sprout in about a week. When two sets of leaves have grown, replant the seedlings to the containers.
- 1). Cut off the top halves of plastic 1-gallon milk or water containers, leaving the bottom halves to serve as the pots for the cherry tomato plants.
- 2). Punch several drain holes at the bottom of the planter.
- 3). Fill each planter with potting soil up to an inch below the rim.
- 4). Dig a small depression in the middle of the soil.
- 5). Scoop out a seedling from the egg tray and gently sink it into the depression in the container pot so that the bottom set of leaves is at soil level.
- 6). Press the soil gently around the seedling, and water generously.
- 7). Place the pots where the tomatoes will get at least 6 hours of full sun everyday. Remember to keep the soil moist.
- 1). Punch 4 to 5 tiny holes in the cap of a 1-gallon milk or water container.
- 2). Use the jug as a sprinkling can for watering.
