    Bugs

    • Chewing insects are pests that mainly eat the leaves of the plants in your garden. When the leaves are destroyed the plants cannot get the nourishment they need to develop fruit or vegetables. Some of the bugs that affect your plants include hornworms, flea beetles, aphids, cabbage worms and caterpillars.

    Why Red Peppers

    • If you have ever worked with hot peppers, you know that they can burn your skin if you are not careful. The capsaicin in the pepper plant burns you. This is also what helps keeps bugs off your plants. They do not like the hot taste of the pepper when you spray a mixture of it onto the leaves of your plants. Garlic is a very aromatic plant. The strong smell of garlic also helps to keep bugs off your plants. Combining these two elements will work to keep your plants from being eaten by the bugs. Use the hottest peppers you can find for best results.

    Recipe

    • Mix together 1 head of garlic, 1 tbsp. of chopped hot pepper, a medium, chopped onion, 1 tsp. dish soap and a gallon of water. Use a blender or food processor to chop up all of the ingredients and mix them together. After putting all the ingredients into a gallon of water, allow the entire mixture to sit for one to three days. When you are ready to use the mixture, strain off any solids and pour the liquid only into a spray bottle.

    When to Spray

    • Spray your vegetable plants about once a week, twice a week if you notice a lot of problems with bugs. Give your plants another spray after it rains, as any hard rain will wash away any traces of the spray. Begin using the spray as soon as your plants sprout. It is safe to use all through the growing season until the vegetables are all harvested.
