Clean and care for your home theater system
Consult your owner's manuals or manufacturers website to determine recommended cleaning practices before you begin. While you can clean a glass screen television with glass cleaning spray, you should not use this or other chemicals on a plasma or flat screen tv screen as this could damage it. After reading up on suggested cleaning products, purchase everything you'll need at your local store if you don't already have cleaning supplies. An electronics and appliance store may carry more product-specific supplies for dvd players or plasma televisions, but large retail stores may also carry everything you need. Chamois cloths, lint-free cloths and dvd cleaning solution are a few items you will need.
To be safe, you should first turn off and unplug all of your electronic appliances. When dusting, it's best to work from the top down so you don't spread dust from one device to another while cleaning up. Use a lint or dust attracting wipe to clean off the top of your television and the stand if it is sitting on one. Some spray products will leave smudges on television material so just use as much spray as you might need on your television stand. Clean off the front of your glass television screen with glass spray and paper towels. If you have a plasma screen or flat screen, don't use chemicals or sprays unless they are specific to your brand of television and recommended by the manufacturer. Otherwise, use a soft dry cloth - or a slightly dampened cloth if you have sticky fingerprints - and gently wipe the surface of your television. Pressing hard can damage your screen so always be gentle.
If you have a speaker system, you can also wipe the tops and sides with a soft cloth with a little bit of wood spray or other gentle cleanser if they are not wood. Be careful you do not get the speaker cloth cover wet or get water into the electric ports of the speakers. If the speaker cover does get wet, gently remove it and set it somewhere to dry. You can also gently vacuum the dust from the cloth covers using a hand-held vacuum cleaner. Don't go full force with a heavy-duty vacuum as this can damage your speakers.
To clean a dvd player, purchase a special kit that will clean the dvd laser. Aside from dusting the outside with a cloth, you don't need to clean the inside of your dvd player weekly or as part of a routine - only clean it when you are having issues with your player reading disks. Follow the direction of the lens cleaning kit to clean your dvd player. Trying to clean it on your own could damage the device.
If you aren't sure what to do, double check with the manufacturer of your device. Otherwise, clean your devices as often as you see necessary.
