    • 1). Depict a colorful illustration on the front cover. Children are drawn to pictures, especially images with vibrant colors. Depict a scene from the book or a main character on the cover. Use the same media, such as watercolor or pencil, on the illustrations inside to give prospective readers a taste of the book. Fill in white space with a background color. Use the illustration to convey the genre. For instance, depict an eerie scene to convey the horror or mystery genre.

    • 2). Limit words on the front cover, as too much text is overwhelming, especially for beginning readers. Use large print to help the reader easily identify the title. Use smaller print for the author, illustrator and a brief caption or sentence to describe the book and to capture the reader's interest and attention. Identify any awards, such as a Newberry medal or any other recognitions the book has earned, by using the symbol or a small thumbnail of the medal for the award.

    • 3). Design a front cover that appeals to children across cultural and gender categories. For instance, include an illustration depicting male and female characters of diverse ethnic backgrounds to reach a wide audience of readers.

    • 4). Provide a brief synopsis of the book on the back cover to give readers a bit more detail about it. Identify the premise or the central conflict without spoiling the plot. Also list any awards or recognitions earned on the back cover. Mention of noteworthy awards earned may entice children as well parents and educators to read the book.
