How to Test Your Home for Deadly Mold
- 1). Look around the house for signs of mold. Find any areas that are prone to moisture or high humidity and look for black, green or gray spots on the walls, ceiling and any fabrics in the area. Visual confirmation is the quickest and cheapest test.
- 2). Scrape off a piece of the mold using a razor blade and place it into a bag. Call or check the website of your local university extension service or EPA office to see whether testing and identification of the mold is possible.
- 3). Purchase a mold testing kit and follow the instructions on the label to test the air near your HVAC ducts and throughout moist areas of the home. Mold testing kits are available online and at some hardware and garden centers. Many are available that test the air and surfaces. The testing device is held in the air coming out of your HVAC ducts and in moist areas of the home and tells you whether mold spores are present. Testing of surfaces requires taking a sample and placing it in the testing kit. Instructions vary between types. Mold testing kits run around ten dollars.
