    • 1). Check the fair market value of your computer on the Gadget Value website (see Resources). You can also check the local value by looking in the classified ads section of the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

    • 2). Use the online version of IRS publication 78 to check the tax exempt status of the charity where you want to donate a computer. If you haven't chosen a charity yet, you can search for all charities in Cleveland. Local and national charities accept computer donations in Cleveland, such as Computers Assisting People (CAP).

    • 3). Take your computer to a drop-off center for the charity. If you aren't certain that the charity accepts computer donations, give them a call or contact them online before taking your computer. Some charities, like CAP, only accept computer donations on certain days. And other charities, like RET3, have drop-off events in Cleveland once a month. Be sure to include any software or accessories with the computer when you drop it off for donation.

    • 4). Ask for a donation receipt if you aren't given one when you drop off your computer. If you plan on claiming the donation on your taxes, you will need the donation receipt.
