The Jeweled Cichlid is a relatively small fish, reaching sizes of no more than 5.

It is not overly aggressive unless its young are being threatened, in which case it will become rather violent in defense.
It does well in a tank with other species, provided that none of the species are smaller than it is.
A 40 gallon tank should be sufficient for the Jeweled cichlid.
The only things a Jewel really needs to do well are rocks and flat surfaces.
Water temperatures should stay between 74F and 80F with a pH level between 6.

The Jeweled Cichlid does rather enjoy digging so any tank vegetation should have its root protected by placing large rocks around it to keep the fish from destroying it.
Jeweled cichlids will eat insects, vegetables, pellets, and frozen and live food.
If you hope to have your Jewels spawn, it is important to ensure that the male is larger than the female as females tend to be disinterested in males smaller than them.
Usually, a couple that is paired up when young will go on to mate at maturity.
This is where the flat surfaces will come in as the female will lay the eggs on a flat surface for the male to come by and fertilize.
The parents will watch over their young until they reach a size of about 1 cm, but they may turn to eat the young after this.
So, you may want to keep the parents and the young in separate tanks for some time for this reason.
